About the work

Each piece is an original artwork, is 100% handmade, and worked entirely by the artist himself.  No jigs or molds of any kind are used in the process.

Most of the work is small, ranging from only 2 to 4 inches in height. A teaspoon is included in the photos so you can see each pot's relative size.

Vessel bodies are hand thrown on the potters wheel using only simple hand tools. Handles are sculpted, tooled and individually fitted to each pot.

Much attention is paid to minute details which makes these little pots look just like scaled-down versions of their larger counterparts.

About the artist/potter

Salks is a native of Berks County and lives near the famous Oley Valley, an area well-known for its rich cultural influence.

There he works as a full-time Early American folk artist and potter creating works inspired by the Pennsylvania German heritage of this region.

2005 marks the first year that Salks brings his work to the marketplace.

About the glazes

Our trademark pottery glazes (or glass coatings) are Salks originals.

Their special quality reflects the warm, old world charm that is treasured by many collectors of fine pottery.

These are all mixed by hand from the raw powders of mineral and metal compounds according to unique recipes that were painstakingly created from years of trial and error.

In this picture, Salks uses a pair of steel calipers to measure the diameter of this crock's inner rim in preparation for making its lid.  Small pots such as this one require a greater degree of accuracy.  Since wet clay shrinks as it dries, this step must be done while the clay is still moist so that the lid will be the correct size.
